Eagles wide receiver Greg
Lewis, or "G-Lew" as he's referred to by his Eagles
teammates, has decided to take the road less traveled in
getting to the NFL. In a day of age where college
players get drafted high, sign exorbitant contracts and
then go on to have average careers, Greg Lewis is more
of a throwback. He’s earned it all by way of gritty, get
your hands dirty, hard work.
Lewis is in his second
year with the Eagles and was one of the un-drafted gems
picked up and polished by Eagles brass Andy Reid and
vice president of player personnel Tom Heckert. Lewis
made such an impact with the Bird’s coaching staff
during training camp and pre-season, he earned himself a
spot on the Eagles opening day roster in 2003. To Lewis,
making a football team by way of hard work was second
nature. Lewis was a walk on at Illinois and finished his
career with 103 receptions, ranking himself tenth on the
all time list.
The
speedy Lewis is currently the Eagles fourth receiver but
you wouldn’t know based on his big play ability and
versatility. This past season, Lewis hauled in 17
catches for 183 yards and since day one has been a solid
contributor on special teams primarily serving as the
“gunner”. In his rookie season, Lewis notched 11 tackles
on special teams. Lewis, who many consider the fastest
player on the Eagles, has shown his ability to
contribute in the running game being the recipient of
reverses and double reverses. In his rookie year, Lewis
ran six reverses for 95 yards. It’s this type of
versatility and work ethic that has earned Lewis more
and more playing time in Andy Reid’s spread it around
offense.
Greg
Lewis is truly a rising star for the Eagles. Last
October, his tremendous work ethic and play was
rewarded. Lewis inked a five-year contract extension to
keep him in the nest for a long time. Not bad for a guy
who walked on in college and was never drafted. Keep
your eye on Greg Lewis, that is if you can catch him…
